How Soon Can I Start Training My Dog?
You can start training your pupppy or rescued dog the day it comes home.
A new dog or puppy benefits tremendously when reinforced as much as possible for all the things you want and like the first days of arriving in a new home. Dogs have a remarkable ability to remember a great deal of information about a situation with just one experience. For example, it will remember the first place it pees for months.
Therefore, training should begin immediately.
That's why I try to make myself available to new owners the same day the dog arrives home.
Dog training is a physical skill, very much like learning a dance, or how to swing a tennis racket or golf club and take concentration and practice.
One on one instruction ensures consistent correct use of
- hand signals,
- your footwork,
- your body language,
- verbal cues (or commands) and
- appropriate tone of voice.
In home training focuses on you and your dog 100% of the time.
What training methods do you use?
I am committed to positive reinforcement. Reinforcement is a basic process in nature, and discovering how the reinforcement process works as to your dog, is one way to understand why he does what he does.
As you train your dog, you will discover how to read his body language and understand his emotions; and in return, your dog will fine-tune his responses to you. Your dog will look to you for pleasurable interaction. You will enjoy it, too. Through training, his confidence grows, and over time, your relationship becomes deeper and richer.
